Hong Kong

Nestled on a serene coastal site in Yim Tin Tsai, Sai Kung, Hong Kong, the E.CO Rotunda revives a historic bamboo grove once revered as “Fung Shui Wood” for shielding villagers from adversities and supporting agriculture and salt farming. This architectural installation seamlessly integrates indigenous landscapes with local culture, restoring the symbiotic human-cultural landscape. It empowers communities with physical, cultural, and psychological connections, reconnecting people to Yim Tin Tsai’s rural heritage through sustainable design that exemplifies harmonious strategies for achieving environmental balance.
Poised to redefine urban sustainability in Hong Kong’s bustling metropolis, this climate-resilient island retreat champions environmental stewardship, social equity, and cultural vitality, aligning with multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In harmony with it excels in site selection, renewable materials, innovative design, and collaborative co-building/management, creating a health-focused haven amid dense urbanity. Curated art and cultural programs foster social ties among villagers, enthusiasts, and families, bridging traditions with nature and creativity as a pilot for well-being initiatives (SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) & SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
The rotunda utilizes fast-growing bamboo to slash carbon footprints in production and construction. Blending Hong Kong’s traditional scaffolding with modern design, its lightweight, triangulated structure maximizes natural sunlight and wind flow, reducing energy needs and highlighting eco-innovation (SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) & SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure). Locally sourced bamboo minimizes waste, with full recycling at lifecycle’s end, embodying a circular economy to combat climate issues. (SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) & SDG 13 (Climate Action)).
It serves as an educational platform via bamboo craftsmanship workshops, uniting academia, elders, and families to strengthen bonds, transfer knowledge, and build resilient, inclusive societies (SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions)). Cross-sector collaborations in co-planning, building, and management ensure enduring cultural and ecological sustainability (SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals)).
More than just an architectural project, the E.CO Rotunda is a visionary demonstration through research, co-construction and art curation, inspiring a forward-looking approach of environmentally responsible innovation.
