"Green Liveable City” is a permanent exhibition at Hong Kong’s City Gallery, commissioned by the Planning Department of HKSAR and designed by OVAL Design. It reimagines exhibition spaces as interactive educational hubs to inspire youth engagement with sustainability. The exhibition uses immersive storytelling and interactive zones to explain urban ecology, encouraging critical thinking about balancing development with environmental conservation.
Themed “The Balance Beam of Development and Conservation,” the journey begins with a multimedia introduction to urban-nature harmony, followed by hands-on zones like a “15-minute Neighbourhood” planning table and a "Blue-Green Infrastructure” model showing rainwater management strategies. A playful biodiversity zone features a treehouse play area, a pinball game on "Urban Greening”, and a sound mixing game “Acapella of Nature” where visitors compose wildlife symphonies. It concludes with a collaborative digital mural where visitors co-create a sustainable city vision - turning education into engagement and imagination into action.
Sustainability principles are embedded in both content and design. Exhibits are made from recycled, modular materials, and LED lighting with smart controls minimizes energy use. Digital displays replace printed materials, allowing dynamic content updates with minimal waste. Each feature serves as both an educational tool and a working model of sustainable practices including biodiversity conservation and climate resilience strategies like stormwater capture.
By empowering children and teens as future changemakers, "Green Liveable City” transcends traditional exhibits. It acts as a community platform to promote awareness, responsibility, and shared action - paving the way for a greener and more resilient Hong Kong.
