HEROCARE is an award-winning education-service model that bridges healthcare training with real-world impact—supporting young cancer patients and their carers through immersive, student-led design. Developed by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the project reimagines how professional identity is formed: not just through knowledge, but through empathy, action, and connection.
At its core, HEROCARE integrates into the academic curriculum, enabling healthcare students to co-design and deliver simulation-based workshops that prepare children aged 3 to 17 for radiotherapy. Using a Hybrid Immersive Virtual Environment (HiVE), these workshops blend storytelling, gamified play, and rehearsal to reduce anxiety and increase treatment cooperation. As a result, 89% of participants completed radiotherapy without general anaesthesia, easing the clinical process and improving patient wellbeing.
For students, HEROCARE offers a rare opportunity to engage directly with patients and families—building confidence, communication, and emotional awareness in a safe, structured setting. More than 320 students have gained hands-on experience in preparing children for treatment while developing the compassion and professionalism essential to modern healthcare.
Visually and experientially, the HEROCARE brand combines clinical credibility with warmth and playfulness. It creates inclusive, emotionally safe spaces where care and learning happen side by side.
HEROCARE demonstrates how thoughtful design can make healthcare more human. By uniting education, service, and innovation, the project has shown measurable outcomes in both patient care and professional development—offering a sustainable model that is scalable across disciplines and regions.
This is design for impact—where students become carers, children become heroes, and education becomes a force for healing.
