The Shenzhen Rehabilitation Center, designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti and its Chinese branch, integrates pioneering concepts of social inclusion and accessibility for people with disabilities. Located in the Longhua district, the complex spans over 26,000 square meters and blends seamlessly into the urban fabric, offering a natural, healing environment.
The center's terraced structure features green spaces, including medicinal and therapeutic gardens, creating a sustainable and biodiverse environment. The first terrace is dedicated to rehabilitation, with areas for light gymnastics, physiotherapy, and vegetable gardens to improve patient care. The second terrace accommodates larger trees and shrubs. The rooftop features a therapeutic garden, maintaining continuity with the adjacent public park and enhancing the connection between indoors and outdoors.
Designed with accessibility in mind, the complex eliminates car traffic, replacing it with green pedestrian pathways and ecological transport. It uses renewable energy systems, such as rainwater harvesting and natural ventilation, to maximize energy efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions.
The center supports a range of functions, including rehabilitation, cultural activities, educational spaces, and housing, all organized around a central courtyard. A sports center and facilities for various disabilities offer specialized training, while eight lift blocks and ramps ensure ease of movement for all users.
With a maximum height of 97.6 meters, the building’s design harmonizes with the surrounding landscape, emphasizing green spaces as vital therapeutic elements and fostering a community-oriented, inclusive atmosphere for rehabilitation.
