Set amidst the rolling hills of Vubwi District in Eastern Zambia, the Umodzi Epicentre is more than a collection of buildings — it is a living testament to the power of community, culture, and design working in harmony. Rooted in the concept of Umodzi — meaning “oneness” — the project embodies collective strength and shared purpose, creating a place where people gather to learn, heal, grow, and dream together.
The architecture draws profound inspiration from its landscape. The buildings rise gently from the earth, echoing the surrounding mountains to symbolise the community’s journey from the depths of poverty toward dignity, resilience, and economic independence. This idea of “rising” is embedded in every detail — from the circular forms that foster inclusivity and connection, to the thoughtful use of space that nurtures growth and collaboration.
Designed by Kamuna Design Studio in partnership with The Patter Foundation, Umodzi reimagines Zambia’s vernacular architecture for the future. Locally made red clay bricks, soaring thatched roofs, and handcrafted details celebrate indigenous materials and craftsmanship, while community involvement in every stage — from brick-making to construction — built both the physical structures and local capacity.
Spanning 3,000 sqm, the Epicentre hosts essential facilities including a clinic, maternity ward, nursery school, skills training spaces, classrooms, and microfinance services, all powered by solar energy and supported by rainwater harvesting and sustainable farming initiatives.
Umodzi is more than infrastructure; it is a catalyst for transformation. Over 15,000 people from surrounding villages have been mobilised, uniting around a shared vision of self-reliance, resilience, and opportunity.
Umodzi Epicentre is, at its heart, a love letter to Zambia — a celebration of place, people, and possibility.
