Green Baby Garden (綠色小腳板) is a social enterprise focused on supporting disadvantaged young mothers in Hong Kong by promoting sustainable practices through the 5Rs principle: Recycle, Refurbishment, Reuse, Rebuild, and Reignite. The social enterprise operates a brick-and-mortar store selling recycled baby products while offering training and job opportunities for young mothers.

The organisation collects unwanted baby items, including clothes, but many are in less-than-resalable conditions. Parents often hesitate to buy second-hand clothing. There is a low percentage of resaleable recycled clothes which are carefully selected and cleaned. Therefore, the majority of unwanted clothes becomes a huge problem. To address this, we decided to upcycle collected clothing into a set of functional baby merchandise for outdoor use, including a diaper bag, a clean clothes bag, and an eating utensil wrapper.

The design of the diaper bag emphasises practicality, featuring organised compartments and a comfortable carrying option. The eating utensil wrapper includes sections to maintain hygiene, while the clean clothes bag is durable with reinforced corners. The colour scheme organises the merchandise into coral red, melon green, and swan blue, with some new materials required for enhanced functionality.

Additionally, packaging plays a crucial role in retail business. An upcycling hangtag, made from scrap materials, highlights the sustainability aspect of the products.

Public education is essential for guiding responsible donations, while upcycling provides a solution to reduce municipal solid waste. Promoting the social value of upcycled merchandise involves training underprivileged salespersons on product features and benefits.

Throughout this initiative, the team learned the importance of iterative prototyping, more training for staff, effective social media engagement, and securing funding for future expansions. By learning from these insights, Green Baby Garden aims to set a precedent for sustainable practice and community support.
